Blog # 7 - Why Does Absolute Power Corrupt Absolutely and Destroy Justice? [the 2nd original essay delivered to the "apostles" that cost me effectively my membership]

(2nd Original Essay)

We all know well the tragic Biblical story of David, king of Israel.  We realize that the Lord, in the beginning, called David, “the apple of his eye” and even after his fall, for hundreds of years, used the outstanding early life of David as the best example He could find of integrity in all Israel.  We also remember that David held the priesthood and even had the right to appoint and perform ordinances, but that he had not advanced to the degree that he had full Priesthood power which would have only come from the Savior’s hands ordaining him personally making him part of the  “one man” or united quorum [Hel. 10:7-11 & WW 1880:78-85]

Although David was a king, he never did obtain the Spirit and Power of Elijah and the fullness of the Priesthood and the Priesthood that he received, and the throne and kingdom of David is to be taken from him and given to another by the name of David in the last days, raised out of his lineage….  Peter says, ‘I would ye had done it [sin] ignorantly … He did not say to them [David or others in authoritative positions who sin against knowledge] repent and be baptized for the remission of your sins; but he said, ‘Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord [why couldn’t baptism cover sinning against light, or the Holy Ghost, then or now?].’  TPJS 339

We also understand that David committed adultery even after he already had been richly blessed and had been inducted into the order of celestial plural marriage, and on top of that, he had a faithful friend, one of his totally trusted military generals “executed” by using yet another friend to cover his adultery from coming to light. Is this an example of how the “oath of brotherhood” is perverted into a Gadianton oath of covering one another’s sins?  [This is obviously a twisting of Lorin Woolley’s statement that he would lie like hell to protect his brethren.  I’m sure he did not mean by that to cover sin but just to keep them out of harm’s way from corrupt enemy government henchmen.]  How did such a good man, David, fall thus from his exaltation so quickly breaking the 6th, 7th, 8th,9th and 10th commandments, at least?

None the less, David and Bathsheba fell, and both committed adultery greatly weakening the genealogical line the Savior was to be born through.  Had Bathsheba, originally, married the wrong man?  It appears so, but if David would have only been patient, Bathsheba’s husband would have been most likely killed in battle naturally, and David could have had Bathsheba legally without either of them sinning, but they both pushed the envelope as they say, didn’t they and went to hell?

What have been the consequences over the last 3000 years of these lustful acts?  By lustful we mean beyond the bounds of the compass that we all wear.  Of course you know that David’s family fell apart after that with incest blowing the circuits of the scoreboard, a son debauching several of his father’s wives while David was temporarily driven out of town.  Another brother raped his beautiful virgin sister and afterward threw her out of doors as a piece of trash.  Is that kind of evil also going on among us, do you think?  Brother killed brother etc. etc. harrowing up David and his entire family for the sins of the father.  Where is David a thousand years after his sins?  The true Apostle, Peter, said David’s grave was still with them or in other words he was not resurrected with the Saints at the resurrection of Jesus.  It appears he still hasn’t been resurrected and it has been now about 3000 years in hell suffering for his sins and all that for just defrauding one man out of his wife and then covering his sin.  It appears that Bathsheba didn’t have any children yet and so, the man with almost absolute authority, only destroyed a small beginning family because of lust or going beyond his legal bounds.  What if Bathsheba had had a large family with many children? What would have been the effect of the adultery and divorce entailing upon all of them, and for how many generations would its corrupting influence have been felt on so many?

If we look for examples closer to home, in our day, of men claiming “almost absolute authority,” the Council of Colorado City pops up quickly into our minds.  When such men with supposed almost almighty authority, but without the Word of the Lord, unjustly dismember or “kill” say, 50 families, some of which are large, teeming with many children, what do you feel would be the results entailing on such men for playing God?  If David has, so far, suffered for three thousand years just for Bathsheba and killing Uriah’s one family, what might entail on men who “murdered” many times that with their little authority as they suppose?  Sobering questions aren’t they?  Don’t you just want to fall on your knees and beg God to make you the head of the Priesthood in our day, when it appears as President B.H. Roberts testified, that we have Prophets who can’t prophesy and Seers who can’t see anymore and thus all these undermined families are “blown to smithereens”, and fall into the “proverbial ditch” often destroying their children’s budding testimonies?  [Truth 8:175-76]  We also highly recommend you prayerfully study Pres. Mus.ser’s editorial on “The Divorce Evil” in Truth 7:200-202.  Your salvation depends on fully understanding these doctrines and applying them if you ever want to go to the Celestial Kingdom by living celestial laws!

Above we used the words: almost absolute authority, which begins to actually describe and define a tyrant.  Webster says a tyrant is: “a monarch or other ruler or master who uses power to oppress – a person who exercises unlawful authority, or lawful authority in an unlawful manner; one who by taxation, injustice or cruel punishment, or the demand of unreasonable services, imposes burdens and hardships on those under his control, which law and humanity do not authorize, or which the purposes of government do not require…. Hence tyranny is often synonymous with cruelty and oppression.”

Immediately pictures of people flood into our minds from history fleshing out this definition such as:  Cain, Caesar, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao Tse-tung, the Council in Short Creek etc. Did you also add, because of our discussion so far, King David whose power corrupted him absolutely as our title states?  Do you think you could find 50 men over the last 40 years, in our Work, who passionately protest against having been bulldozed over by our Priesthood Council, wives having been ripped away from them, often with very questionable justification and almost always without real revelation to authoritatively break the eternal covenant?  For a more detailed discussion of what real revelation is see:  95 Questions That Still Need Answering by Bro. Steve [Blog # 6 published Oct. 12, 2014] and also see Truth 8:175-176 & 8:260-262.

What did the Lord put into place to help check such unrighteous dominion or wrong use of power: prophet power, presiding priesthood power, and “king-men” or those for total governing power among us?  The obvious answer is that both Joseph Smith and Joseph Musser wrote extensively about The Lord’s Justice System partially described in D&C 102, and again by Brother Steve way back in 1997: Why is Justice a Chief Attribute of God and a Godly People originally published in the Candlestick [Coming Blogs 11-24].  Again why is a Supreme Court needed in our United States national system?  To balance the President and Congress,of course.  What balances the almost absolute authority of the President of the Priesthood and the Council in our Work today?  Nothing!  Have you noticed the headers and footers of each and every page [in the original hard copy], one of which says:  "A body of men holding themselves accountable to nobody, ought not to be trusted by anybody"?  Thomas Paine

Since human nature has not changed in, or out of the Work, since the Fall of mankind, then does it seem reasonable to you that such a system as Bro. Musser taught us about, needs to be also put in place among us - in our “united orders,” to help us with our petitions for divorce, and to settle the cases where more powerful people take advantage of less powerful people in financial matters?

“We have learned [have you yet?] by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.”    D&C 121:39

There is a principle of Priesthood law mentioned in British Common Law, in United States Constitutional Law, in the Book of Mormon and implied in the D&C that fleshes out a Priesthood Justice System called interposition.”  This principle of law was attempted to be used by the South in stopping the Civil Rights legislation in the 1950s but was discredited by our rogue Supreme Court, the same court responsible for the murder of about 40,000,000 babies since 1973 or approximately the population of California.  The principle of interposition is once again being called upon to stop Obama Care by several states in the Union. What do the little guys do if the big guys, with all the power, begin to move into advanced tyranny of unrighteous dominion?

In Mosiah 29:29 [verses 27 & 28 are also germane] we have a brief mention of this principle of Priesthood law and government, called interposition: “If your higher judges do not judge righteous judgments, ye shall cause that a small number of your lower judges should be gathered together, and they shall judge your higher judges, according to the voice of the people.”

Applying that to the Work, if the Council largely became complicit in un-righteous dominion, covering very serious sins, grossly misappropriating tithing funds etc., then before it is eternally too late and before “amen to their priesthood,” would it not rightfully devolve upon the next ranking bodies of Priesthood, the Seventies [and those High Priests also living the celestial law of marriage], to hear the case against the Council, and to rule a righteous judgment?  [John 7:24 and JST Matt. 7:1]  That, of course, presupposes that the Seventies and the High Priests were trained in a Priesthood Justice System [the purpose of several blogs forthcoming], which most of them are not yet even very aware of.

What about the D&C?  Where is this principle implied?  Check out:  D&C 107:24, 26, 32 & 36:

“And they form a quorum [a united body of Priesthood with the Spirit of God filling them], equal in authority and power to the three presidents previously mentioned….  And they form a quorum equal in authority to that of the Twelve special witnesses or Apostles just named….  And in case that any decision of these quorums is made in unrighteousness, it may be brought before a general assembly of the several quorums, which constitutes the spiritual authorities of the church [gathered believers or assembly in Greek]; otherwise there is no appeal from their decision….  The standing high councils at the stakes of Zion, form a quorum equal in authority in the affairs of the church [gathered believers or assembly in Greek into which we were all baptized] in all their decisions, to the quorum of the presidency, or to the traveling high council.  The high council in Zion [celestial law] form a quorum equal in authority in the affairs of the church, [Lord’s definition of church in D&C 10:67-69] in all their decisions, to the councils of the Twelve at the stakes [colonies] of Zion.”

Some may try to dismiss the scriptures above by saying they only apply to the nation or the Church, but remember the Lord gives us a pattern in all things and which applies on all levels from the telestial to Celestial Kingdoms or that which should be found in this Work - including the government of nations to the government of the Kingdom of God and God’s Priesthood on both sides of the veil.

Hopefully you are beginning to understand that all these Priesthood classes we have been attending for years and all the thousands and hundreds of thousands of hours we have spent fasting, praying and studying the Gospel is so we will apply it into our lives, isn’t it?  If we believe in all these principles but don’t apply them, aren’t we also like the ones described by the Lord when he condemned them who say but don’t do, individually or collectively?  Also if we don’t counsel together and correct ourselves with the principles the Lord has revealed, as far as we can, before the One Mighty and Strong comes, won’t we likely be viewed as that which is only worthy to be “acted upon” [the non-valiant], and not spiritually righteous enough to receive revelation through the “keys” each endowed person has received?

Let’s now look at some fundamental parts of a Priesthood Justice System by looking at the foundations of correct government being established in this country during the Revolution of 1775 – 1781.  What was the spark that ignited all the theory into action?  Written words in a small pamphlet exposed the fallacy of some false doctrine which had kept the blood of Israel in the chains of bondage for over 2500 years.  You may remember it was called Common Sense and was written by Thomas Paine.  One of the main principles that Paine elucidated on was the fallacy of the doctrine of the “divine rights of kings.”

The kings taught that they were God’s representatives on the earth.  No matter how they acted, God had chosen them and there was nothing the common man could do to legally rein them in.  So the thought to the God-fearing men in this country [and in this Work] of taking a position of fighting against God, their Divine Sovereign, kept them from moving from theory to actually setting things in order by applying correct Gospel principles.  Paine showed the world that kings, and the principle of total government  [totalitarianism], also so prevalent in our day, nationally and religiously, which we find examples of in Russia, China, Iran, and in Short Creek and, oh, yes also in hell, is given to the people when they won’t follow correct principle for such a long time that God curses them with kings [or sin-filled priesthood leaders].  99% of the time, these tyrants, were and are, unrighteous, as we clearly understand by reading in the books of Samuel, Kings, Chronicles and the book of Ether as well as current newspapers [see 1 Samuel 8:7].

The very rare exceptions to this rule are but a few righteous rulers, or leaders, who could survive the terrible weight of “almost absolute power” as seen in such men as Nephi, Benjamin, Mosiah and other prophet kings or king-priests such as Shem or Melchizedek and Joseph Smith.  These wonderful men give us hope that someday pure Priesthood brothers will be sufficiently developed who will be able to justly reign with Christ as He becomes King of kings.

Another important concept to clearly grasp is seen when we ask the question, who were the “rebels” in this Revolutionary War conflict, and who were the true patriots following correct Gospel principles?  Who was rebelling against centuries and centuries of principles of free government, stemming from the days of Moses about 1400 B.C., the kings and Parliament of England or the Patriots?

If you are uncertain on this important point realize that The Declaration of Independence was, in some ways, a document of “interposition” listing 27 monumental grievances, or atrocities, against the tyrannical king, George the III of England, and demonstrating that he had violated his “oath and covenant” with the church politick or the “general assembly of Israel” as a lineage through his unrighteous dominion.

You might be saying at this juncture that that may have been true before Priesthood was restored in this dispensation, but now we are under a theocracy and not a theo-democracy which is only to be found in the Church. The implied premise of this narrow position, that we, as a priesthood body, are a theocracy and that no democratic principle of balancing power is present in the Priesthood Work, is that we have a man, who like Moses is getting real revelations and not just “inspiration” such as any good Methodist might also receive.  If we have no real “one man” with power like Nephi, son of Helaman or of Joseph Smith caliber which we read of in D&C 132, then the “theo” or God-part of theo - cracy vanishes leaving us with only “cracy” or arbitrary government rule which is often filled with tyrannical mon-archy or, historically, a more stable form called olig-archy or the rule of a few powerful ones but not usually who are in contact with God.

“Behold, I give unto you [righteous Nephi] power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people…. And if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou cast down and become smooth, it shall be done…. Go declare unto this people, that Thus Saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty; Except ye repent ye shall be smitten even unto destruction.    Helaman 10:7, 9.

When a man has come to a state of purity to that degree, where we have good reason to trust him in great measure because he has visibly proven his love and devotion to God, then we would be more justified in relying on his words with much more confidence than just an ordinary non quickened man just standing in some office, even that of presiding in Israel, as king or president.

While Joseph Smith was running for the Presidency of the United States he said the following as part of his platform:

“As the ‘world is governed too much’ and as there is not a nation or dynasty, now occupying the earth, which acknowledges Almighty God as their law giver, and as ‘crowns won by blood, by blood must be maintained,’ I go emphatically, virtuously, and humanely for a THEODEMOCRACY, where God and the people hold the power to conduct the affairs of men in righteousness.”     T&S 5:510

In this same spirit consider D&C 64:38-42:

“the inhabitants [demo = people] of Zion SHALL JUDGE all things pertaining to Zion.  And liars and hypocrites shall be proved by them, and they who are not apostles and prophets shall be known.  And even the bishop who is a judge and his counselors, if they are not faithful in their stewardships shall be condemned, and others shall be planted in their stead.  For, behold, I say unto you that Zion shall flourish and the glory of the Lord shall be upon her; and she shall be an ensign unto the people…”    [see also: Treasures of Know. 1:31]

Drawing from this revelation, does the Lord expect Zion, or the people trying hard to live celestial law, to root out and expose liars and hypocrites who are among their leaders?  Is He also describing the fact that men claiming to be apostles and prophets but who weren’t properly called or who don’t have that much of the Spirit of God are to be exposed somehow? If they don’t or can’t repent when exposed, what should happen to them?  By what process are they to be condemned and others planted in their stead in this Work?  Obviously as this Work becomes more and more Zion-like, these principles of the Lord’s Justice System will be fully developed and practiced won’t they?

President Brigham Young adds to what the Lord has revealed to the Prophet when he further instructed us on more of the details of this Priesthood Justice System that must be fully established in this Work or else it seems we may be getting to the stage where it is amen to our Priesthood as a people.  Pres. Young spoke of “theo-republics” and “theo-democracies” being the same to him.

“I believe in a true republican theocracy, and also in a true democratic theocracy, as the term democratic is now used; for they are to me, in their present use, convertible terms.  What do I understand by a theocratic government? One in which all laws are enacted and executed in righteousness, and whose officers possess that power which proceedeth from the Almighty. That is the kind of government I allude to when I speak of a theocratic government, or the kingdom of God upon the earth. It is, in short, the eternal powers of the Gods."

"What do the world understand theocracy to be? A poor, rotten government of man, that would say, without the shadow of provocation or just cause, ‘Cut that man's head off [his wife & family?]; put that one on the rack [disfellowship without a hearing]; arrest another, and retain him in unlawful and unjust duress while you plunder his property and pollute his wife and daughters; massacre here and there.’ The Lord Almighty does nothing of that kind, neither does any man who is controlled by his Spirit. Again, the theocracy I speak of is the power of the Holy Ghost within you  [higher order revelation from God] — that living and eternal principle that we do not possess in the fullness that we are seeking. When we talk about heavenly things, and see the world [Work?] groveling in their sin and misery, and loving iniquity and corruption, the heavens weep over the people, and still they will not infringe upon their rights. God has created them so far perfectly independent as to be able to choose death or life; and he will not infringe upon this right.”     Brigham Young    JD 6:346-7

So in our day are the totalitarian principles of the “infallibility of the Pope or king”, or “follow the living prophet blindly” who will “never lead you astray” now manifested in this Work as:  the man holding the “keys” who is supposed to get revelation but can’t, has spoken - so rest assured, there is no corruption among us coming from the Priesthood Council at all, and therefore no need to correct any evil among our leaders?  With the testimonies and documents coming out in the near future you should clearly be able to see that that that position is blatantly naïve and false!  Do you believe that repentance and “return and reportaccountability is also sorely needed for the priesthood council as well as all the rest of us?

Now I will address some of the objections to what has been written thus far.  The “you are out of order, because you are steadying the ark” charge will now be briefly examined.  To refresh our memory of this historical allusion we read:

“When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath [one of Aarons priestly sons] shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die.”   Num. 4:15

The Levites would be like our deacons and teachers and the Aaronites would be like our priests. Only one of the three bodies of the Aaronic priests, were even allowed to touch the sacred Ark upon penalty of death.  For the other two groups of Aaronite priests, it was beyond the scope of their calling to even touch the Ark or in other words they didn't have the priesthood calling to do it.

Now we move forward in time to about 400 years into the days of King David.  David had gathered 30,000 choice men of Israel to transport the Ark to Jerusalem but the Levites made a serious procedural error.  God had commanded that the Ark be carried on the backs by one of the groups of Levites who were not allowed to even touch the Ark, and instead they made a new cart violating the Lord’s strict Levitical Law of Moses commandment seen above in Numbers chapter 4 which we just read.

“They set the ark of God upon a new cart … and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab drave the new cart …        and when they came to to Naachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.  And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.”        2 Sam 6:3-7

Later David said:

None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God… because ye did not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order … and the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.”       I Chron. 15:2, 13, 15

We clearly see that none but the Priests of Aaron could touch the Ark, not even a Levite priest.hood bearer, who carried it.  What is the main point for our gleaning here?  Heavenly Father wants us also to strictly follow His commands as well where only the proper person should precisely do what the duty of his office commands.  After the tragic death of Uzzah, David waited three months before he would even go near the Ark out of fear, but we know he still didn’t fully get the message because of the stark violation of the command, “be ye clean who bear the vessels of the Lord” when applied to David’s stark sinning against se.xual purity with Bathsheba.

In D&C 85:7, 8 the Lord alludes to the example above from the Old Testament but with some differing details:

“And it shall come to pass that I, the Lord God, will send one mighty and strong, holding the scepter of power in his hand, clothed with light for a covering, whose mouth shall utter words, eternal words; while his bowels shall be a fountain of truth, to set in order the house of God, and to arrange by lot the inheritances of the saints whose names are found, and the names of their fathers, and of their children, enrolled in the book of the law of God;  While that man, who was called of God and appointed, that putteth forth his hand to steady the ark of God, shall fall by the shaft of death, like as a tree that is smitten by the vivid shaft of lightning.”

The One Mighty and Strong refers to Jehovah, in the Old Testament, or anyone He sends and empowers, generally a resurrected or translated person.  Only He can ultimately set in order, the out of order house of God in our day.  But who is the man who was called of God properly, and appointed who tries to steady the Ark and is struck down?  On November 13, 1905 Pres. Joseph F. Smith took the position that the man was Bishop Edward Partridge though his quick death was mitigated because of sincere and fervent repentance.  Then Pres. Smith adds:

“If, however, there are those who will still insist that the prophecy concerning the coming of ‘one mighty and strong’ is still to be regarded as relating to the future, let the Latter-day Saints know that he will be a future Bishop of the Church … with the spirit and power of his calling, that he will be able to set in order the house of God….”

We see here that Pres. Smith has enlightened us by revealing that the house of God will be set in order by a legal priesthood bearer or possibly, we might add, by a group of them and he/they will have “the Spirit and Power of his/their calling.”  We know that even a Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood is commanded to: “see that there is no iniquity in the church [or the Group]D&C 20:54  how much more so,  Melchizedek Priesthood bearers, called by a true Prophet, Rul.on C. All.red, and empowered and commanded by the Lord to, at least, cry repentance to the people?

By shining a light into the now, often habitually accepted darkness among us, we may also be accused of operating in the office of the adversary by being “accusers of the brethren.” Again this argument, this misguided attempt to stop justice in its tracks with such a gross misapplication of scripture, has been well handled, on pages 23-30 of the, already mentioned Why is Justice a Chief Attribute of GOD and a Godly People?  Get a copy.  [Blogs 11- 24].

Next we hear the wailing of children among us, still fixated in what was allowed to happen to them, often now adults, who say, yes there truly are/were abominations by which I was ab.used, but I will not bring them forth into the light because to do so will violate the 5th of the Ten Commandments:  “Honor thy father and thy mother….”  To expose them to the justice they deserve won’t be done by me because I won’t break this commandment and add to the hurt of my family and to the already tarnished image of this Work.

This not seeing clearly the actual truth is perhaps reminiscent of the lie about the official regal clothing of the emperor who in reality wore no clothes at all, which truth was only seen clearly by a courageous child.  By extension we might also apply this reasoning by saying that all our leaders, teachers etc.are representative of  our fathers and mothers of this 5th commandment, and so we will not use our influence to tell the truth about them either.  We can go on with this foundation-less logic and say even our evil government officials are not to be brought to trial because of their protected positions implied by the 5th commandment.  By the way, does the Pres. of the Priesthood today, actually have on clothes, or true habiliments of Priesthood Power, or is he stark naked?  What do you personally perceive with your spiritual eyes? Do you have the courage to "make a righteous judgment" as the young child, or are you part of the "trained masses"?

Does God command us to honor evil?  No!  Does He mandate that we honor evil parents, teachers and leaders as well, or rather only those parents, teachers and leaders are to be honored to the degree that they honor the pure commandments of God? What does it take for the devil to be triumphant on this earth?  Is it not for good men and women to do nothing to stop the spread of evil, frozen in their tracks by misguided notions that are devoid of the truth?  Isn’t this perverted loyalty like that found among doomed victims of secret combinations of evil?  Are some of us in this Work deciding to remain victims because of our fear of standing up and loudly proclaiming, “What happened to me was very wrong!”?  Do you realize that you will stay stuck in that childish victimized mentality until you receive the courage from God to speak against the evil done to you, which, when you do, will start your healing and move you from the grasp of the evil chains of our adversary into the healing light of Jesus Christ.

You might be saying: "Alright, to fully hear you out, before judging you to be an apostate, we want to understand what you believe the Lord is commanding you to do about all the evil among us that most of us are too afraid to bring into the light of day."

A terrible truth that needs to be pointed out is that when we, each of us, doesn’t have the courage to speak out against and expose sin and evil among us, for whatever excuse, we actually end up casting our vote for and condoning the very iniquity that we so loath and hate, and thereby actually strengthen the evil by our silence becoming participants with the devil by default?

But the Lord has revealed clear instructions for our deliverance by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

D&C 134:8  “We believe that … all men [women and children] should step forward and use their ability in bringing offenders against good laws to punishment.”

Evil can only survive and thrive in the darkness, in the hidden darkness of fear and shame!

2 Ne 3:5    Wherefore, Joseph [in Egypt] truly saw [seer] our day. And he obtained a promise of the Lord… [that] the Messiah should be made manifest unto them [us] in the latter days, in the spirit of power, the bringing of them [us] out of darkness unto light—yea, out of hidden darkness and out of captivity unto freedom.

Some souls filled with fear and lacking sufficient courage and faith in God, might misapply a quote from the Prophet as an excuse to do nothing:

“Our lives have already become jeopardized by revealing the wicked and bloodthirsty purposes of our enemies and for the future we must cease to do so.  All we have said about them is truth, but it is not always wise to relate all the truth.”  HC 6:608

Is there a difference between cleansing the “inside of the platter” of this Work, and revealing too much of all the evils of the secret satanic conspiracy imprisoning this world in chains more and more each day?  We, who are servants of the Lord, are commanded to cry repentance generally unto the people, and then the responsibility is upon them for their own sins and not on those of us charged with this great responsibility.

While the Prophet was in Liberty Jail he wrote revelatory letters making up sections 121-123.  The following clearly lays out our responsibility within the Work and outside of the Work, and if we are to honor our sacred covenants by obeying the “law of the Gospel” as contained in the Scriptures, then how can we be justified and fail to fulfill such injunctions?  Are the principles in these revelations applicable to the Work we are in today?  Nephi's council answers that question very well when he said:

"I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning."  1 Ne. 19:23

D&C 123:1-17:  “…we would suggest for your consideration the propriety of all the saints gathering up a knowledge of all the facts, and sufferings and abuses put upon them … And also of all the … damages which they have sustained, both of character and personal injuries …And also the names of all persons that have had a hand in their oppressions, as far as they can get hold of them and find them out … And perhaps a committee can be appointed to find out these things, and to take statements and affidavits … and present the whole concatenation of diabolical rascality and nefarious … impositions that have been practiced upon this people … in all their dark and hellish hue, as the last effort which is enjoined on us by our Heavenly Father, before we can fully and completely claim that promise which shall call Him forth from his hiding place; that the[y] … may be left without excuse before He can send forth the power of his mighty arm.

… “It is an imperative duty that we owe to God, to angels, with whom we shall be brought to stand, and also to ourselves, to our wives and children, who have been made to bow down with grief, sorrow, and care, under the most damning hand of … tyranny, and oppression, supported and urged on and upheld by the influence of that spirit which hath so strongly riveted the creeds of the fathers, who have inherited lies, upon the hearts of the children, and filled the world [Work] with confusion, and has been growing stronger and stronger, and is now the very mainspring of all corruption, and the whole earth groans under the weight of its iniquity …

Therefore it is an imperative duty that we owe, not only to our own wives and children, but to the widows and fatherless…under its iron hand;  Which dark and blackening deeds are enough to make hell itself shudder, and to stand aghast and pale, and the hands of the very devil to tremble and palsy …

It is an imperative duty that we owe to all the rising generation, and to all the pure in heart … who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive … Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven … These should then be attended to with great earnestness. Let no man count them as small things; for there is much which lieth in futurity, pertaining to the saints, which depends upon these things … Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.”

In keeping with these revelations and inspired instructions from the Lord, do you intend to accomplish your “imperative duty” of “bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness in this Work UNTIL ACCOUNTABILITY IS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED?

Again, if you remain silent or neutral and do not take a valiant stand against the evil among us, won't your indifferent neutrality or lack of involvement become "your testimony of silence"  proclaiming that you don't consider these abusive, tyrannical and oppressive sins really that evil to you because they are part of your nature as well?

Do What is Right”   [Song]

Do what is right; the day-dawn is breaking, Hailing a future of freedom and light;

Angels above us are silent notes taking Of every action; do what is right!

Do what is right; let the consequences follow; Battle for freedom in spirit and might; And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow; God will protect you; then Do what is right!

Do what is right; the shackles are falling; Chains of the bondsmen no longer are bright;

Lightened by hope soon they’ll cease to be galling; Truth goeth onward; Do what is right!

Do what is right; be faithful and fearless; Onward, press onward, the goal is in sight;

Eyes that are wet now, ere long will be tearless; Blessings await you in doing what’s right!

Do what is right; let the consequences follow; Battle for freedom in spirit and might;

And with stout hearts look ye forth till tomorrow; God will protect you; then Do what is right!

If you can no longer, in good conscience, keep silent as you watch evil rot away at all "the apples" in our Work bushel basket then bare testimony and bring into the light the hidden sins among us as commanded by God!

For the tender-hearted and sensitive among us who read of the extent of the fallen nature, those that might tend to become discouraged and want to quit, consider that one of the tests we each must pass is to stand for the right and pure principles no matter who violates them. We must decide to stand for the truth no matter what the consequences, right?  Therefore endeavor, the best you know how, to move forward in the same spirit as Pres. John Taylor did when he boldly testified:

"if any man [leader] attempts to use any kind of arbitrary authority, and act with any degree of unrighteousness, God will hold that man [leader] to an account for it … if men do not and will not yield obedience to the laws of God, then it becomes the duty of those who preside over them to see that the law of God is carried out, and that these unrighteous men are severed from the Church [Work of God].  We have adulterers among us, and wherever I have heard of them I have directed that they be severed from the Church.  Why?  Because I cannot permit it, and God will not permit it.  Who is it that will be outside of the Eternal City by and by?  The liar, the hypocrite, the whore monger, the sorcerer, and the adulterer – they shall be with the dogs outside of the city….  “We are told that we are not to be partakers of other men’s sins.”   John Taylor JD 24:268-269

“She had entered into covenants which were sacred.  She had violated those covenants.  The Book of Covenants says that such people shall be destroyed.  I could not change it.  I did not make the law….  ‘Can I stay in the Church,’ she asked.  ‘No, madam, you can’t.’  I could not assume the responsibility, the Bishop could not assume the responsibility, the High Council could not assume the responsibility without becoming partakers of the crime.”   John Taylor JD 26:360

If you too do not want to be a partaker of the crimes you personally know of  and be accountable, to a degree, for them also at the judgment bar of God, then begin to clean your garments of the blood and sins of this people!  It is past time to stand up and be counted for righteousness!

“We did magnify our office unto the Lord, taking upon us the responsibility, answering the sins of the people upon our own heads if we did not teach them the word [the truth]…otherwise their blood would come upon our garments…”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Jacob 1:19

                    Song from the 1940s:

“Give me some men Who are stout-hearted men/ [women]

Who will fight for the right they adore

Start me with ten, Who are stout-hearted men/ [women]

And I'll soon give you ten thousand more

Shoulder to shoulder And bolder and bolder They grow as they go to the fore!”

Sincerely,

Bro. Steve

P.S.  Remember, “It is in vain for persons to fancy themselves that they are heirs with those, or can be heirs with them, who have offered their all in sacrifice, and by this means obtained the faith in God and favor with him so as to obtain eternal life … unless they, in a like manner, offer unto Him the same sacrifice and through that offering obtain the knowledge that they are accepted of Him.”  Lectures on Faith 6:8

P.P.S.  We often get after the Church for suppressing uncomfortable facts and information they know about, but this Work exists because we, as a people, are open to all truth which we test and discern by candid investigation, through the Holy Spirit of God, don’t we?

Comments, Blog 7 - Kings vs. God, or Why Does Absolute Power Corrupt Absolutely . . . 1. Superscription. Condemnation before investigation, otherwise known as prejudice has its roots deep in human psychology. The human animal has as part of its mental makeup, a proclivity to save time for reflection when a judgment and action is necessary. Heightened emotions are readily called upon depending on the degree of threat perceived. The mental prejudice program or application is useful and those without an ability to judge quickly are often clueless in flowing through situations that require good judgment and adaptation to danger. The prejudice factor can also be manipulated by demagogues (Gk. leaders of people) through the use of vivid descriptive words delivered in dramatic fashion – word pictures and illustrative stories. 2. Those who aspire to lead and not be led, those who desire to become masters of situations cultivate the ability to control the bias (leaning) towards pre-judging and weigh observations more carefully against previous experience as well as gather a wealth of information from which to form judgments. 3. One of the marks of maturity, spiritual and temporal, is the ability to keep prejudice in its place as a servant and not a master, and be alert for attempts by others to blind, steer, stimulate a thoughtless reaction. The path to godhood requires growing one’s capacity to exercise balanced judgment. If you are pressured to rush to judgment or judge based on hot-button stimuli, you are being used and devalued, not respected. 4. Pgh. 1. The story of David and Bathsheba shows how God deals with covenant-breaking sin and betrayal of brotherliness when God is directly in charge, working through a prophet (Nathan) who has fulfilled the requirements of his office to stay “in tune.” The lesson for us this time is – what happens when God’s chief representative is not performing to standard? “Quo custode eus custodies?” (Who keeps the keepers?) 5. Pgh. 2. What standard of forgiveness covers sins when the sinner ought to know better and is sinning against a commitment to forsake sin? This class of sin involves a deliberate choice, not just surrendering to impulse. Those in authoritative positions have a heightened responsibility to represent God, or they would not be called and should not have accepted. The gentiles have what they call the Peter Principle which states, a man will rise to the level of his incapacity. God has a strict standard for persons who have command or teaching example authority/power over others. Harming others directly is a category of sin God does not disregard. Jesus says so. 6. Note as part of the story that David’s chief henchman, Joab, rather than acting as a brake or conscience made the choice be complicit in the crime, presumably to ingratiate himself with David and gain a position of secret knowledge that would devolve upon him increased honors and preference. David, in a moment of selfish weakness fell back on the counsel of man; the “arm of flesh” scripture calls it. 7. What is hell? One state of hell is receiving less of an eternal reward than one had previously earned and was led to expect. Another is to be deprived of the presence of the Father and the Son (and presumably the Holy Spirit). We do not realize how much this “light of Christ” means in our lies. 8. Lust (pronounced loost) in German means “will.” These sins are acts of will, or choice with energy. We take it to mean a will directed toward self-indulgence at the expense of others. 9. The sons of David, it appears, were held in check by the moral authority of their father. When David fell, they felt no compulsion to keep their place, nor honor their father’s standards. They had the appearance of godliness, but their inner forces within them were just waiting to for release. Their identification with their father was broken. They were no longer their father’s sons. What of our children? What are the consequences of the example we have set? 10. Indeed, among us there is a legion of invisible victims. I am not pleased to say that the reaction of those who share a degree of responsibility all too often blame the one who reacts to loss and broken sacred covenants by departing altogether, peeling off their negative emotions and the whole fullness experience. “They were just not valiant in the gospel.” “Am I my son’s or daughter’s keeper?” “. . . and if ye are not one, ye are not mine” (D&C 38:27) isn’t just about sharing temporal things, but sharing, nurturing, mentoring, and discipling as well. 11. 7-2/1 Originally in the Greek, the word tyrant simply meant a non-hereditary autocrat, without a negative connotation. The behavior of successive tyrants soon gave the title its sinister meaning. 12. 7-2/3 When you’re looking at the Caesars of history, you are looking at a chain of rulers from Augustus Caesar to Romulus Augustulus over about a 500 year span. The most notorious tyrants (accepted connotative meaning) without significant redeeming virtues were Caligula, Nero, Commodus, and Caracalla. Their victims were predominantly from the aristocratic class. Others didn’t interfere with orderly administration and so Rome for centuries was “too big to fail” and continued despite civil wars, assassinations and incorporation of barbarians who entered the borders, but brought their culture and cultural allegiance with them. For the Christians, persecution began with Claudius, considered a good emperor, who expelled them from Rome, and peaked and ended with Diocletian who tried to restore Rome to a common cultural norm and instill universal allegiance to the commonwealth by a scale of murder presaging the political religions of the twentieth century. {13. 7-2-3. One of our bloggers ended his comment by saying that “the Work is the only game in town,” expressed with more reverence, of course. That is the line the LDS church members recite from the highest to the lowest and they believe it. Those who have migrated to us from the LDS fold have faced that fork-horned dilemma before. See pgh. 14.} {14. There is another in game in town beyond a church or a Work and that is your relationship with your Father in Heaven. You do hold the priesthood, or, hopefully, share in it, and the Lord will tell you that if dare to ask. If you are not sure, if the heavens are silent on a given point, then act as-though. Seek and ye shall find. It’s difficult to say a great deal in a small space. It’s up to you to build up in your mind, witnessed by the Holy Spirit of where you are and what the Lord would have you do.} 15. The great migration to broadening and strengthening civil rights for subjects becoming citizens over 800 years from Magna Carta took place because of group of men with the power to act for themselves (with their swords) decided that the king, the nefarious John, must be put under covenant to abide by and even enforce a rule of law or be subject to it. They substituted for the divine right of kings, the divine right of united swords. John did not give up easily. It took a powerful pope (Innocent III) and an army of French mercenaries under Philip II to convince him to behave. 16. Government by consent of the governed is a part of pride for the nascent United States. {Do men meekly surrender their wives because they feel they have no other choice?} The beginning of a choice lies in living the gospel in terms of how one treats one’s family and how one teaches one’s family. Indeed, living the “higher law” requires one and all become increasingly law-abiding. Who are we fooling, if we don’t? 17. Back in Rome, the mother of the emperor Caracalla had to watch him kill his little brother before her face, and show no emotion or she would have been killed, too. What scenes of horror have our mothers been forced to witness involving the victimization of sister-wives, and yet remain silent. These are sins against the soul. The survivor’s children among them denied justice, carry in their hearts a deep alienation from this Work and what they rightly perceive as ungodly hypocrisy. Being of that mind denies them the better portion of reward they could have had. Read their blog posts, elsewhere. It’s a degree of murder. 18. The Spirit of the Lord can be elusive as it turns this way and that in bringing about the will of God in hostile environments. The process by which England was raised from the yoke of Rome to a Protestant nation with increasing toleration for religious conscience is an example that took place over 300 years. Tyrants only know how to use the tools of men and the understanding of men to exercise their will upon others and protect their privileges. (The process by which Mohandas (Mah·atma, Great-Soul) Gandhi obtained freedom for his people from a foreign occupier was what he called non-violent non-cooperation.) 19. Step one is to recognize a problem exists. This is what Bro. Steve is trying with such a whole-soul commitment to do. Step two is to consult with the Holy Spirit about the nature of the problem and one’s role in it. We are commanded to pray for deliverance from the evil tyranny that lies upon this nation to be removed and the temples be opened, etc. We can likewise pray for deliverance from the barrier that separates us from the spirit of God and from the oracles of God. Experienced prayersters know that it is better to pray the Lord acts on a thing that you have recognized than to prescribe what He should do. Be aware and open yourself to be led by the Holy Spirit. To cooperate, pray and do what you are prompted to do. This sort of prayer is a consultative and cooperative dialogue. “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Lk. 11:1) 20. Developing a listening heart and confidence in the still-small voice is an integral part, an indispensible part, a shepherd’s staff to sustain you as a member of the fullness of the gospel. You can’t know what to do if you’re taking your orders from the wrong place. 21. Do not cede your sovereign relationship with God and do not shrink from your duty and your opportunity to know things for yourself and your family. You learn in order to make not just prayer but directed prayer that aligns your concern with that of God. The deniers would not have you pray for correction at all. 22. The purpose of this blog is to build, not break – unite, not divide. Unity and building come from unity with God in truth and with justice and with like-minded people. The unity of the unjust has to be counterbalanced by the unity of the just-seekers. Consider, when you pray for confirmation and direction the example of the Polish people who defeated and deflated an authoritative regime by spiritual preparation and endurance followed by a wave of action at the appointed time. Nobody got killed, only a tyrannical regime that did not know how to govern a free people. 23. Gresham’s law about the relationship between truly valued money and falsely valued currency is this: “Bad money drives out good and good money drives out bad.” The balance of those law-abiding souls to God’s eternal pattern and those who are yoked to man’s way has had control long enough in favor of man. 24. Start defining yourself as embracing and embodying good. Empower your conscience; assemble your standard of right and wrong and don’t borrow your standard from someone else. Go to the sources, which are scripture and prayer. Strengthen yourself; this you can never do while you are dependent on anyone that claims authority, but does not act according to the laws of authority. See Section 121. 25. We have not progressed beyond the law. The law is our schoolmaster and when things get so lawless, unjust and tyrannical upon women and children and men in the God-sanctioned exercise of their stewardships, then its time to go back to school. We have now in our midst men who think themselves to be above the law, and have proven this by refusing to uphold or even recognize justice for the most vulnerable among us. All that’s lacking for them is a public declaration in the spirit of, “You have the law among you; I am the law.” To such men, the law is no less a hindrance than it is to those in power now in the nation. How can there be such a yawning chasm between what men are supposed to be and how they act? 26. Once the path direction has been set a momentum builds to stay the course. Opportunity follows opportunity, obstacle follows obstacle. “Who can be right, if everybody’s wrong?” 27. Take this saying from the gentile world, “If it walks like a duck, if it squawks like a duck, if it acts like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, if it flies like a duck, if it lies like a duck, if it flits like a duck, if it **** like a duck, if it has downy feathers to pluck – it’s a duck, people.” (“I am not a duck; there is no duck {devil}.”) 28. The tail does not wag the dog, but since when is a righteous man a tail to any dog. This blog is not here to call for lawlessness to respond to lawlessness, rather to get ready to seek the law others have abandoned (except in name) and live by it. God will do the rest. 29. “Follow his way.” – “Follow that way.” – “Follow this man.” – “Follow that man.” No. Lead by seeking truth for yourself, seeking God for yourself and find God first. “The king commands me to be brief, so brief I must be. I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Last words of Sir Thomas Moore, 1535. 30. Weigh the spirits the weigh the words of those who claim authority above law or say they are law abiding. “Actions speak louder than words.” Wake up. You should have sensed something wrong about Joe and George and Chevrol, etc. I did. And I dared to think so and not suppress the suspicion. 31. 7-8-1. Before you can do what is right, you have to know what is right. Admittedly it is a painful process to dare to acquire that knowledge and as a consequence be responsible for acting thereby. This is the same process that new investigators and new converts have to go through over and over again. It is the process by which we advance in light and knowledge. Remember, in the Garden of Eden, the man was not deceived. Still, he made a decision and went ahead. Shrinking from examining, weighing and deciding for yourself shuts out the ministration of the Holy Spirit for your growth and greater degree of salvation. If your mind has been clouded and closed and you let that stand, how can you hope to gain the attributes of a God to exercise judgment? 32. I have another question for you – if you were God, would you do things the way they are being done in this Work? Would you subject your precious children to predators and conspirators that shield them? Would you permit your people to be robbed? Would you call such a regime your own? What would you do if this people were yours? It is yours, as much as it is anybody’s if God’s law and God’s justice were extant among us, kept by our would-be rulers. 33. Lucifer wanted to do the thinking for everybody and get them a sure, but low-level of reward, not equality of opportunity, but equality of outcome. (This is the theme of liberal socialism, today.) We were once valiant then; we chose the harder way. The same choice is before us now – submit to paternalism or seek God and His righteousness and give to men only what is their due, which is not possession of your conscience and gatekeeping of your privileged communication with our Father in Heaven via the Holy Spirit in prayerful consultation. Remember, the gentiles petition God and would direct Him. We consult and are guided. 34. 7-8-3.A herald in the Medieval sense was more than a horn-tooter or an announcer. A herald was a warfare referee, an instrument of peacemaking that claimed no allegiance to either side in a conflict. 35. 7-8-4. We follow John’s statement of fact about not partaking of other men’s sins when we refuse to underwrite them. When I have prayed for our leadership/rulers, I have always added the qualifier, “in their righteousness.” 36. If our study, listening and experience in life teaches us anything it should be that God is no respecter of persons when it comes to upholding an equality of justice and measuring conduct. High office adds to a man's authority to exercise oversight and have the means to conduct a stewardship involving others, but it does not confer immunity in the form of making sin in any degree into righteousness. “The (earthly) king can do no wrong,” is not a part of the righteousness of God or of his servants who serve him in loyalty and in truth. Is it? Mormonism is a religion of secrets, official and administrative. The purpose of secrecy is to preserve and protect and advance the kingdom and its people, not to preserve and protect and advance sin in the interest of a few. 37. 7-8-5. Since God judges the intent of the heart by intimate and direct access to our thoughts as we think them, and our judgment is in part a combination of intent and deed, God applies mercy and forgiveness. It is in our interest to seek Him while He can be found and amend our course while we remain in this our probationary state. 38. 7-8-8. The paradigm returns. Whose rule should we follow, God’s or man’s? If on the threshold of the end of man’s reign over the earth, are we so foolish and blind as to say and believe with all our hearts, “It can’t happen here?” Do we have no responsibility to get our skirts clean and make His paths straight? 39. 7-8-8. God’s rule is not just matter of being ordered about by Him or others in His name, it includes following on our own the rule of God’s law. I expect what the Savior will say to those who have ruled over others in His name, yet lawlessly to their hurt: “What have I to do with thee?” “Depart from me ye workers of iniquity (unequal dealing).” (Lk. 13:27) 40. 7-8. Pgh. 9. Housetop Heralds. In the warfare of the Middle Ages, a society of heralds acted as go- between in the interests of both sides. They declared victory and justified the end of the fighting. Before a battle, they carried messages among the combatants with the intent of averting conflict and minimizing loss. They began the role of “Brand Keepers” to see that distinguishing symbols (devices) on shields (copied from Moslem practice) would not conflict and accurately reflected relationships. They arranged ransom demands and payment transfers. They dressed in elaborate costumes to distinguish themselves in scenes of conflict and before intensely suspicious combatants. They enforced, with the aid of both parties, an evolving law of war designed to decide issues above gratuitous slaughter. Their persons were sacred because of their value in preserving the rights and dignity of the noble combatants. “Blessed are the peacemakers . . .” (Mt. 5:9) 30. 7-8-10. The sacrifice in this case begins with the sacrifice of our sense of security and complacency and fear of men, thinking that all’s well in Zion, yea, Zion prospereth.” And not daring to focus our concerns. 31. 7-8-11. I learn something new every day. 32. 7-8 Subscript. Acceptability to God for men so ordained to that privilege goes with accessibility to His oracles delivered with clarity and force (revelation). If a body of men who behave contrary to God’s law that scripture teaches (shared accountability), claiming they are acceptable to God but don’t behave acceptably, their words will appear to their condemnation at the Day of Judgment. Let us hope we are afar off from them when that moment comes. Men – there’s nothing in this world that cannot [be to] them. Men, stout-hearted men [with just a few] stout-hearted men. Postscript How do men get that way, to adopt the tyrannical model? I think some of it has to do with “out of sight, out of mind” attitude towards God. Some men just don’t feel in themselves a “God-sense.” Some men just don’t make common cause with God in caring for others. (Some men don’t have common sense, having been too long exposed to a cultural, and not a Spiritually-based religion.) The gospel is imperfectly taught, but a man who has a God-sense will gather the pieces and even if they are imperfectly understood, will seek the Lord and amend his life to obey God (more or less) as best he can, coming back again and again and accepting correction. Men teach from what they have come to know through experience in opening themselves to the God-prompts and signs that surround us. A man or men who are of a tyrannical disposition will reveal themselves in time. As an insurance plan against double-minded, deliberate teaching, God wanted his spokesmen to speak without notes as prompted by the holy spirit. When the gifts of the spirit are present, the hearers will share that spirit. Many of us are satisfied with our own strength and competence. The rules and regulations under which we labor are like the training wheels on a bicycle. They are designed to acquaint us with God’s way and when we are spiritually mature, we take it from there. Concerning the pit into which we as a work have fallen, we need to reference the law as a means to have a sense of acceptable and unacceptable, because not all brothers are fully brothers. God is supremely law-abiding. The notion that God can do whatever he pleases is a man-based concept in harmony with the Devil’s religion that says that his servants can do whatever they please to those under them, just as they can be done-to by the demons more powerful than they. The reason the Devil exercises some restraint is that he is on a program of conquest and conversion of his victims from their somewhat godly nature to his. Demon obsession/possession in some cases, is more revealing of what the Devil desires to do with his victims, the annihilation of their souls. The God nature is that He can do only the full range of things we understand as good. If we’re going to be like Him, we have to amend our natures to be like His and be full of doing good and feel a sense of reward in so doing. The Joseph Smith religion was about empowering and growing each priesthood holder. Here is one of my blasphemous heresies. I believe the Savior intends that each man shall be as a seventy, imbued with the love of Christ and a listening heart to minister to all as the Holy Spirit directs. I believe the Savior intends that each man shall be as a high priest, imbued with a sense of rectitude to maintain godly principles without deviation, for the wellbeing of the saints. I believe the Savior intends that each man shall be as a prophet, seer, and revelator, exercising the full range of priesthood powers. I believe that Joseph, by handing out priestly authority, was following the Savior’s mandate to fully empower as many as would meet minimum conditions. These offices carry with them attributes. It was the intent that men, by having the offices would grow and develop the attributes, the servant-leader, the humble, the caring, the self-denying soul of Jesus. Of course, this did not happen. A great apostasy occurred almost immediately. A man is to have these authorities and exercise them within a circumscribed sphere, and having proved himself, receive additional responsibility. Character is to grow with the office. “. . . thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.” (Mt. 25:21) The problem these men have is they don’t know God. They are left to know God after their own natures and so when God waves the rod of his authority, they understand God that way. Man, having limited power to keep track of all parts of a complicated issue tend to organize it by simplifying it. This life is a fair test. “It takes one to know one.” If we somehow have acquired a sense of love and joy in raising others, that will characterize and guide how we learn and apply the gospel, and we will recognize the Savior in that light. If we have a different attitude toward other people, we will organize our understanding of God after that way. The Reformation leaders according to their backgrounds and scholarship of men adopted different understandings of God to present to their congregations. Luther emphasized God’s inclusion as a welcoming, albeit stern, savior. Calvin emphasized the majesty and authority of God to the saved. The words, the tools of our understanding, have different meanings to different people. Humble, is one that comes to mind. The word in Greek has a meaning like “yoke-able” having the attitude of an ox prepared for work. The definition that resonates with me is, “teachable.” Other understandings are, “self-abasing,” “deferential,” or “submissive.” The understanding that I find most useful is not a word, but a concept, that being mindful of the interest of God and of others. “a listening heart” is another way I apply the attitude that the word “humble” stands for. The opposite is to be “full-of-one’s-self” and all the adjectives that flow from that. You are seeing on the stage before you, men who are practicing and understand only a portion of the gospel. They are tending and trending to teach you after the same limitation that they have. As you accept their concept of God: a God who is disengaged, a God who is to be appeased, a God who has given His authority the way you would toss a piece of food to a wild animal that runs up, grabs it, and runs away, you will be changed also. Hundreds of people on the RMS Titanic died needlessly because they believed this biggest ship in maritime history was too big to sink, so they rejected open seating on lifeboats. The Titanic sank because immutable laws were violated. When you have a big enough opening in a ship below the waterline and watertight compartments are not fully watertight, it will sink, whatever men say about it. The same applied with the 4th century saints, the 19th century saints, and with us in the 21st century, as well. When men bear off rule in God’s name the way a wild dog races off with a piece of meat, the Spirit of the Lord is not with them. If we follow them in their error, we will share in their estranged and unworthy attitude, as well as sustain upon ourselves the wrecking of the most holy principle and the spiritual purity of our children who undertake to marry in their travesty of celestial marriage (travesty by divorce, as well as unholy license taken by certain patriarchs).Authority, spirit, and action go together. They are inseparable components of a covenant. God is patient. I believe because of what men and women agreed to do in the Preexistence, he is extending and delaying the application of the law for those who corrupt holy ordinances. The injunction to disregard Bro. Steve without examining the facts, without testing the facts before your “light of Christ” and your power to pray for answers is like the ineradicable black stain on the hand of Benedict Arnold. It represents a further descent into darkness. “Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity (unequal justice) you never knew me.” (Lk 13:27 corrected by Joseph Smith) We’re not going to know God if we follow and do likewise in disobedience those who have disobeyed to keep celestial marriage celestial, who have attempted to seal off the eye of God in you from their cover-up, who have put at their head and yours a man who (for abundant cause) does not possess the prophetic attributes, who teach a gospel of control, rather than humble-empowerment, who arrogate to themselves an unimpeachable and unquestionable authority, independent of the accountability to God through men. I didn’t forget the action of seizing tithing funds and monies from the powerless and running off with them like wild dogs at a carcass, or capos in a mafia counting room. “Pray to know that the heavens agree with us,” they say. “Strain like drowning men to know the truth as we say it is,” they say. Drowning is what happened to the hapless sojourners on Titanic who wouldn’t leave the safety of an only slightly inclining deck and the comfort of the lights to crawl out on planks into the chilly darkness and the gently shifting boats. I think a better and more appropriate thing to say is, “Repent, or share their fate.” The presence of keys, or ordinances, in light of what the Lord does and doesn’t retain in view of our transgressions in keeping holy things holy among us is out of my hands. So is respiration. I care that the Lord isn’t in this. The same rule applies to your knowledge of the standing of your ordinances as it does to any other act of discernment. If you want to know the things that are rightfully yours to be known, ask of God. Be like a tub and stand on your own bottom. If you won’t, there are men who want to stand on yours. Do you see what ignorance of God causes? Sin makes men ignorant of God: the mind of God, the will of God, and the love of God. We can't be saved in ignorance, God says. What about willful ignorance? What about a fearful turning away? The big sin of the churches of men is giving to men that which rightfully belongs only to God. This actually can be experienced. See D&C 10:2 in which it describes what happened to Joseph when he disobeyed. “And you also lost your gift at the same time, and your mind became darkened.” See also D&C 84: 43-54-61. The Lord is describing the operation of spiritual gifts. Who are we working for? Are we to understand God only through the inter-mediation of men? Is this the one, true religion different from all the others in righteousness? Is this the message of the legal structure of the Church contained in the Doctrine and Covenants? The death of spirituality in the primitive Christian church occurred when men accepted the government of men rather than the government of God through men, not discerning the difference. The death of the ministration of God, himself and the diminution of the ministration of the Holy Spirit happened for the same reason with the LDS Church. Is it true that we don’t know any better? The gifts of the holy spirit aren’t with us in grater abundance because we don’t avail ourselves of those we do have. I submit to you that the disease of man-centered religion has been with us all along, from the founding of this church in 1820, and it has assailed the people of God time and time again. In fact, it has been a part of who we are, like a personality disorder. It is up to each priesthood bearer to learn the fundamentals of the faith for himself, in every generation, all over again. The word presented by another cannot do any good if it does not speak to your heart. You have to find God, yourself, in spite of those around you, if necessary. Every one of us is on an Abrahamic journey to reject the idols of man-centered religion. The gospel has always been this way. This religion we belong to is no different, no different. We have truth filtered through other men, and then we have truth that speaks to our heart through the light of Christ within us, and we have truth in the form of the still-small voice. We can't get by solely on the words that come to us from men, even a Joseph Smith. Look what happened right after Kirtland. “Flesh and blood hath not told thee this,” the Savior said to Peter. The oracles of God, although they may be in teaspoons at a time, are ours for the asking, but we have to believe and believing, ask. How can I tell you what love is? How can I tell you the fruits of doing the Christian thing. I can only tell you a story that comes to my mind. It’s night. It’s October a lifetime ago. I see myself seated behind the wheel of an automobile. A girl is lying across the seat on my lap, in tears. She’s so grateful that I didn’t impose myself on her, or even try. She was expecting just that, a part of her had consented to come hoping against hope this time it would be different. I hadn’t had it in my heart to use her. I hadn’t gotten the car for any purpose other than to be with her, a step away from my usual way of non involvement. How can you share the love of God with someone other than by respecting their personhood and being unfailingly kind? We are to bear one another’s burdens. We are to be ministering angels to one another. If we take no joy in that, we are dead to the mind of God, no matter what emoluments we assume to possess. Our religion and how we live it and how we share it is a reflection of who we are. In sharing with us the plan of salvation, Jesus’ concern for us is based on transforming us in who we are.
The Herald Sounds - Second Call If there be such among us as those who would further the kingdom of men within the kingdom of God, who “can’t see the forest for the trees”; they would not know the Lord because they don’t honor his spirit of humble love in the example he set while he walked among us. God is not at the center of such men. They would understand God in the same way the Protestants and Catholics do - at a distance. They would assume they have peace with God because they hear no voice of contradiction and “all is well in Zion.” (2 Nephi 28:21) Such men would be confident in the rightness of their ways because of the words of ordinances pronounced over them, as though that were all sufficient. God is over there – somewhere else. Performing the burdens and inconveniences of office is sufficient recompense for God. They would not believe in their own given gospel. Instead, they would believe in their own religion, created by themselves using selective emphasis of doctrine with them at its head – Idolaters. They would rely on the expressed confidence of one another, just as would have relied on the outward face of such men as Joe and George and Chevrol. In a fatuous exclamation of overweening pride, the German army of Kaiser Wilhelm II issued belt buckles with this motto engraved along with their national symbol: GOTT MIT UNS. It translates as: “God [is] with us.” This is the reverse of what God’s people should strive to be. The blasphemy here is they never included a qualifier, requisite of us in order to have the blessing. Instead of God is with us (right or wrong), we should strive to be with God, keeping His statutes and thus always having His spirit to be with us. One of the things many of us are lacking is acceptance that the New Testament, the story of the Lord’s earthly ministry, is the predecessor to which the Doctrine and Covenants must be joined in our hearts. No one is on the other side of the Doctrine and Covenants, but the Father, the Son, and just men made perfect. From President of the Priesthood to newly baptized, we are all under the authority of that scripture as we strive to be on a level with it. The spirit of all our revealed scripture is the Spirit of Christ, summarized in the 11th commandment: “And a new commandment I give unto you; that ye love one, another as I have loved you.” (Jn. 13:34) Add to that, “Let him who would be greatest among you be the servant of all.” (For the real quotes see Mk 9:35;10;34.) Add to that, “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God.”(Lk. 18:16) “. . . Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Mt. 25:40) These scriptures form a unity, revealing the genuine spirit of God and the spirit of those who would be like Him. A lifetime of living the fullness in the Household of Faith should make these living scriptures, polished through daily use, not bits and pieces tossed aside in odd corners of granddad’s attic, brought out for special occasions. These are not optional admonitions, rather they are commandments. “If you love me, keep my commandments.” (Jn. 14:15) We don’t get to pass by these by any more than we will get to pass by the guardian angels who bar the way back to the throne of the Father. Fundamentalists who are weak in these fundamentals build their “living the higher law” on a foundation of what?” It’s not living the higher law if it is practiced in unrighteousness. A distinguished name doesn’t make it holy (Celestial Plural Marriage). It is made holy by the spirit in which it is lived. Love is realized by deference, restraint and self-denial on behalf of all members to the covenant as per Paul in Ephesians 5:21 also 5:22-28 and Colossians 3:13,18,19. 1 Peter 3:1-9. The LDS-Mormons and the sectarian Christians are more secure in their reward if they keep these commandments and admonitions close to their hearts and emanating from their beings through conduct than those who pretend to be living a higher law who would wound the souls of wives and destroy the selfhood of innocent children in order to gratify their base animal lusts and paint over stinking sin with public piety. Ponder this in who we sustain to preside in our midst: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” (Jas. 1:8) The little people are bewildered. Love is absent, truth perverted, when justice is denied. They are told on occasion they are a peculiar people called out from among the nations. The Principle (Polygamy) is more important than Christianity in the lives of some. This is one of their biggest errors. “. . . thou has left thy first love; . . . repent and do the first works.” (Rev. 2:4,5) A two-Ievel community is not the Lord’s work. Excluding the less favored from justice is not of the Lord. If the fundamentalists are not founded in fundamentals, they can’t build a kingdom in holiness to the Lord. He won’t permit it. Believe it or not, restoring equal justice under one law (God’s) for all is the remedy for much of what ails us (but by no means all). Restoring a spirit of good will and rebuilding the bonds of friendship goes along with it. Why is it so feared by some? We must find the answer to this and remove the obstacle, otherwise we are not living in the fullness for all our self-assuredness. (What are we full of, if not the spirit of God?) A justice system can’t work can’t work to redeem if it is administered by unrighteous corrupt men. It requires; 1) men of integrity [consistency, and constancy] 2) the Spirit of the Lord engaged 3) a scriptural system applied. Love the Lord thy God by minding him – living for his approval – love thy neighbor as thy brother and if that doesn’t work, as thy friend. Defer, help, and forgive the small stuff. Forgiveness, by the way, is a medicine. To be effective it must be administered as appropriate for healing to occur. There is the forgiveness we already make in our hearts for our healing and the glory of God, and the open forgiveness we give when the offender is ready to receive and benefit from it. There needs to be a spiritual rebaptism in the Work. This in preparation for the ordeal the world is hurtling toward. While we hear peaceful initiatives proclaimed, nations are preparing to displace the weak and effete and nihilism is feeding on the corpses of dead countries. Sin enjoys governmental protection. The weather is breathing harder and the earth is starting to rebel. We need to take stock as to what is important. Let what is happening here be a lesson; use it as a signpost. If there needs to be reeducation, let it begin here. Prepare spiritually. The need for rededication of this people is bigger even than the scandal that is staring us in the face. Those who persist in error are fated. Those who lean on the arm of flesh to the exclusion of the counsels of the Lord obtained in prayer are likewise fated. If leadership and direction doesn’t come through the usual channels, make purposeful repentance combined with positive action a matter between friends and within families. If reform doesn’t come from the top down, we must seek to know God for ourselves and live accordingly. In matters of obtaining the word of the Lord and a working relationship with the Holy Spirit, many of us have coasted too long, preoccupied with daily cares and need to catch up. Spiritual muscles need exercise and training. Instead of it being a solemn threat, “And out of mine own house shall it begin” (D&C 125:25,26), turn that into a rallying cry for as many as will find what is wrong, find how to fix it, and as much as it is within our sphere and lawful, let us fix it. There is so much in the way of good habits to be learned and strengthened and so little time remaining, we must begin now. The scriptures are keys that can be turned against us to convict, or helps to show us the right way. It’s really a matter of waking up. “Who’s on the Lord’s side,” now, is the issue we must face. The presence of this scandal serves the useful purpose of awakening us to the danger of passivity, submission to whatever is rejected by God, and blindly following what is blind. We must get on the same page with the Lord. If his spirit of valuing others in friendship and daring to be valiant in living a holy life is not in our hearts, his scriptures and the way we should go will not be in our understanding. “You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. You can lead a man to reason, but you cannot make him think.” You are a teacher, even silently by example; this is a critical role in building the kingdom on a bedrock foundation. The people have been misled for generations in the critical area of how and with what spirit governance is to be exercised among us, and that is why we have law and justice suspended and all the other ills that afflict us. And that is why sinners of the worst sort have participated as our leaders for so long, and so many have been blind, some even willfully blind to it. “Learn to do by doing; learn to love by loving.” Many women and some men have good instincts, but no way to grow outside of their nursery flower pots the leaders are keeping them in by avoiding true teaching and denying the proper and potentially reforming administration of justice. What will we do when we discover the rank-and-file haven’t failed so much as their leaders have failed them - for a mess of self-serving pottage? God has no choice but to remain silent, if He wants to stay behind the scenes to develop the character of His chosen elect and enable them to attain greater degrees of growth in eternal things. God has no choice to resolve this impasse than to let the others wreck. When it reaches a certain point, no single reformer can clean it up. Who will wreck with them, like the woman who famously said if Joe Thompson were separated, she’d go, too? Who will follow the Lord? The way to respond to leaders in these uncertain times is trust – but verify. Wherein is priesthood authority derived? The definitive answer is found in the Doctrine and Covenants, Section 121:34-46. There it states that priesthood authority is contingent upon its exercise according to strict guidelines of self-denial and self-control. Higher priesthood authority does not give independence from those guidelines, but makes the holder personally accountable for initiating his own atonement for offences. It’s like mastering the swimming pool, with a shallow end, swimming lanes and a diving expanse. The student gain skills requisite to handling the demands of each less-bounded and less-protected area, and then graduates to the next. The standard contained in D&C Section 121 tells us how to comport ourselves as well as how to measure others and know, over time, what sort of people they are, so we keep our standards separate, if necessary. We may follow a man in a lawful task, but not make his example our own or confuse him with Godlike judgment and wisdom, when he behaves to a lesser standard. D&C Section 121 gives us a clear summary of what the Lord expects of us as citizens of his kingdom and the kind of people he expect us to be. This tells us what he values and shows us who he is. With the correct model of the nature and intent of God in place, all the scriptures we learn to recall on demand or recognize, or become available when needed in recoverable memory should fall into place and be easier to link together as an integral whole. This is a matter of learning and growing that takes place over a lifetime and is sealed to us little by little as we act on them.
